It is unusual for military generals to speak about “war” in any country. Sometime between Xi Jinping taking power in the Chinese commission and the beginning of February, two current generals of the Chinese military spoke in the meetings of the military. Their speeches were leaked out, summarized and published in Chinese media including the Global Times and People’s Daily in the beginning of February. One is Qi Jinguo, Vice-Chairman of the General Staff Headquarter of the PLA, and the other is Liu Yuan, son of Liu Shaoqi, Political Commissar of the General Logistics Department of the PLA. The former insisted that
cannot loss an inch territory regardless of the circumstance (PLA net 4 February 2013). The latter emphasized that China , once again (similar to in 1894 and 1930s), is trying to interrupt Chinese modernization. This time, Japan Japan, along with the , might disrupt Chinese wishes. Therefore, the military must be aware and prepare for war (Global Times 4 February 2013). By now, the Chinese side is ready to act; however, is US ready? Japan

On December 27, 2012 a spokesman for China’s Defense Ministry expressed strong opposition to the US defense authorization act. “The content is a rude interference in China’s internal affairs and harmful to our strategic mutual trust. We are strongly opposed to it…. Someone wants to profit from a troubled situation in the Diaoyu Islands, and someone wants to bully people by flaunting their powerful connections. All these are futile efforts (UPI 28 December 2012),” stated by Yang Yujun. In addition, the spokesman criticized a planned deployment of F-35 fighters to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan in 2017 which was revealed by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on December 18 (BBC News 28 December 2012).
