The Death of Fang Lizhi
Fang Lizhi passed away in the United States in April, symbolizing the end of era in the Chinese democracy movement. The former vice president of the University of Science and Technology of China, Fang was placed at the top black list after the Chinese government crackdown of the “June Fourth” movement in 1989. Interestingly, when people, such as Fang Lizhi and Wang Dan started the democracy movement in China, most of them sought political asylum overseas, especially with the United States. After two decades, most of them including Wan Dan and Wuer Kaixi have desperately wanted to return to
the Chinese government has refused to let them return. This is the case of many
other democracy movement figures including Liu Bingyan and Wang Dan. Why? China
