Suyan Rock/Ieodo Sino-South Korean Territorial Dispute
Suyan Rock in China, Ieodo in Korean, is located 149 km off southernmost island of Mara Island of South Korea and 247 km from the Chinese nearest island. While Seoul claims the islet based on median method of international law principle, Beijing argues that the reef is within its territorial waters based on exclusive economic zones of international law. The South Korean media warn that China appears to have the strategic goal of strengthening its control over the South and East China Sea (JoongAng Daily 12 March 2012). The fundamental problem is international law has limit meaning and many unclear definitions; many lawyers from many countries can interpret their own way of the international law.
