The Shangri-la Dialogue/Chinese Way of Hegemony-IX

At the news conference of the 10th meeting of Shangri-la Dialogue (IISS Asia Security Summit) in Singapore, Kishore Mahbubani from National University of Singapore asked an interesting question to Secretary Robert Gates: “Five years from now, with the perception that American influence will be declining, what do you do to reassure countries in this region that things will actually remain the same five or ten years from now (Phoenix News 10 June 2011)?” “I will bet you $100 that five years from now, United States influence in this region is as strong if not stronger than it is today,” answered Gates.  Anyone can bet $100 right now that five years from now, China will be a totally different China (i.e., a stronger China). This year, China dispatched for the first time ever its Defense Minister Gen. Liang Guanglie to the meeting and he answered questions in a  press conference, emphasizing China will never seek hegemony.
