Neo-Conservatives Advice Again
Thoma Mahnken, former top Pentagon official, participated in a Lowy Institute workshop in Sydney on maritime security in Asia and presented his paper titled“Secrecy and Strategem: Understanding Chinese Strategic Culture.” According to Maknken “[i]f there were a network linking the sensors of all the participants, another confrontation between China and Japan would produce a unified reaction…. We have sovereign territories in that second island chain. The US is a Pacific power, that’s part of our identity. And clearly, the Chinese are trying to undermine US influence in the west Pacific, and detach us from our allies and partners.... We need to be very clear-headed, and understand the Chinese on their own terms, as a predicate fro any action on our part.”(The Australian 21 February 2011). Also he suggests that that according to the Japanese media, the U.S. along with its allies including Australia, should use unmanned planes to gather and share intelligence surveillance, and reconnaissance on the China. Thomas Mahnken was one of people responsible for drafting the US Quadrennial Defense Review. Remember!! A group of neo-con scholars proposed President Bill Clinton to attack Iraq to provide “democracy” in 1996. But, Clinton did not do it. However, a few years later, George W. Bush took neo-con’s advice to invade Iraq in 2003. That why the US right now are in the mess of the Middle East.
After growing up and studying in China and Japan, Dr. Suganuma went to the U.S. for graduate studies, earning master’s degrees at both St. John's University (in Chinese studies) and Syracuse University (in international relations) as well as a Ph.D. (in geography) from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
