Sino-Japanese Naval Diplomacy
On February 20, 1943, the Japanese imperial navy landed in Guangzhou city. More than 60 years later, on June 24, 2008, the Sazanami, the Japanese naval destroyer, docked in Zhanjiang, a port city in southern Guangdong Province. This time, the Japanese navy received a 21-gun salute from the Chinese navy, and only Japanese and Chinese reporters were allowed dockside for the Sazanami’s arrival at a Chinese naval facility. The visit by the Japanese naval destroyer a return visit for a port call made by the Chinese guided missile destroyer Shenzhen naval ship to Yokohama in November 2007. During the visit, an earthquake humanitarian relief mission, the Japanese navy brought relief items including 300 blankets, 2,600 pre-packaged meals, hygiene items, blankets, medical supplies and other relief goods for survivors of Sichuan’s earthquake.
