Okinotori Islet Bill and Japanese Diet
On 18 May 2010, the Japanese Diet (House of Representatives) unanimously passed a bill which will protect the Okinotori Islet. Under the new law Japan would invest and repair the islet by creating an EEZ. In the following day, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu denied the Japanese claim that Okitori Islet was an islet, claiming that it was a bare rock which does not qualify for 200 EEZ under international law.
