Hu Jintao’s Military Control
Hu Jintao finally began to control the Chinese military. On 20 July, Hu Jintao promoted three “princelings” including the son of Liu Shaoqi, Liu Yuan, to general rank, the highest military rank in PLA. By now, 17 out of 27 military generals were promoted by Hu Jintao, controlling the PLA. Since Hu took the post in the PLA in September 2004, he has rarely promoted people into the general rank. Except in 2006 (10 people), Hu Jintao has only promoted 4 people in 2007 and 3 people in 2008. Also, only 3 people were promoted to general in 2009. By contrary, his predecessor Jiang Zemin promoted many to the rank of general -- 6 people in 1993, 19 people in 1994, 10 people in 1998, 16 people in 2000, and 15 people in 2004. According to Hong Kong media (22 September 2009), the grandson of Mao Zedong, Mao Xinyu also was promoted to major general.
