On 8 July 2009, Hamada Yasukazu, former Defense Minister in Japan, indicated that the ground Self-Defense Force (SDF) troops will be deployed to Yonaguni Island, Japan’s westernmost islet. Very few people have the geographical knowledge of Yonaguni Island, which is just 110 kilometers from Taiwan’s eastern coast, and roughly 150 kilometers south of Sino-Japanese disputed islands, Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands (Kyodo News and Phoenix TV). Japan’s move had made the Chinese media widely picked the topic as the top news in the Chinese media. What will the Chinese (from both Taiwan and mainland) do?
