Crazy Idea by Sato Eisaku
Recently, the Japanese government released some documents regarding Prime Minister Sato Eisaku administration. In one account, Sato, who is uncle of former prime minister Abe Shinzo (9 months in office), wanted the United States to use its nuclear weapons against China in retaliation if Japan became engaged in a was with China. These discussions took place during talks with Defense Secretary Robert McNamara in Washington in 1965, when a year after China had its own nuclear weapons. It is understandable that Sato was scare regarding potential Chinese retaliation because Japan was responsible for great damage to both Chinese people and Chinese nation during WWII. However, Sato Eisaku’s request was unrealistic at best as the Americans were clearly reluctant to use nuclear force against China. The US resistance to using nuclear force against China is evidenced the President of the United States firing General Douglas MacArthur because MacArthur was ready to use nuclear weapons against China during the Korean War.
