The Chinese Missile Interceptor
Currently, only three nations: U.S., Russia, and Israel, have the technology to shoot down a missile. On 18 January 2010, China joined the interceptor club because the Chinese military intercepted a missile in mid-flight during a test-fire. It is unusual that the ministry of foreign affairs announced the test. “The test has achieved the expected objective…. The test is defensive in nature and is not targeted at any country (CCTV).” Foreign media has reports in 2006 that Beijing tested a surface-to-air missile in the northwest of China, the capabilities similar to the American patriot interceptor system. According to the 2009 Pentagon Report on China’s Military, China has limited ballistic and cruise missile defense capabilities. Some media reports that the interceptor missiles are believed to be deployed near major cities and strategic sites including Three Gorges Dam. This timing of the Chinese test-fires missile interceptor followed the White House decided to sell PAC-3 air defense missiles.
