The Chinese Aircraft Carrier-I
On November 17, 2008, General Qian Lihua, director of the ministry of foreign affairs, had an interview with the Financial Times in English. Regarding the issue of whether the Chinese will build its aircraft carrier or not, General Qian states clearly, “The question is not whether you have an aircraft carrier, but what you do with your aircraft carrier.” In other words, Gen. Qian made clear that China had every right to do build its aircraft carrier. In the 2008 Chinese military report, the Pentagon predicates that China is actively engaged in aircraft carrier research and will build one by the end of this decade. According to Japanese media reports, China has already purchased some aircraft carrier technologies from Russia, and is in the process of researching building aircraft carriers at two facilities in Shanghai. Taiwanese media predicts that China will have its first aircraft carrier by 2010. Will there be Chinese hegemony if it has its aircraft carrier? Will the Chinese use its aircraft carrier to defense its territories?
