The 60 Anniversary Naval Festival

In Qingdao, the Chinese celebrated their 60 anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The Chinese government invited many countries to participate in a naval festival on 23 April 2009. There were 21 naval ships from 14 nations which were joined the celebration (PLA Daily):

1. Canada: HMCS Protecteur AOR509;

2. U.S.: 6,800-ton USS Fitzgerald DDG 62 (a Japan based-destroyer from the 7th fleet);

3. France: FS Vendemiaire F734;

4. India: INS-Mumbai D62 and INS Ranvir D 54;

5. Australia: HMAS Success AOR 304 and HMAS Pirie ACPB 87;

6. New Zealand: HMNZS Te Mana F 111 and Endeavour A11;

7. Pakistan: HMCS PNS Badr 184 and HMCS PNS Nasr 47;

8. Mexico: Sailing ship ARM Cuauhtemoc;

9. Russia: Missile Cruiser Varyag and MB-99 Auxiliary Vessel;

10. Singapore: RSS-68 Formidable-class Frigate;

11. Republic of Korea: “Gang Gam-chan” Destroyer and “Dokdo” Amphibious Ship;

12. Brazil: Amphibious Landing Ship “Garcia D’Avila;”

13. Bangladesh: BNS Osman;

14. Thailand: “Taksin” Frigate 622 and “Bamgpakkong” Frigate 456.

Along with these 21 naval vessels, China displayed its nuclear submarine, the “Kunlunshan” 998 amphibious ship, the “Lanzhou” Destroyer, and a new-type of missile speedboat, which is equipped with an advanced missile and anti-electromagnetic interference system. The question is this, “Where was Japan?” The Japanese navy did not receive an invitation. The Japanese politicians need to think about the reasons. In fact, 87 Diet members including 11 in the cabinet posts visited Yasukuni Shrine, and Aso Taro offered the gift of the “masakaki” – the branches taken from a “sakaki” tree – to the Shrine during the spring festival two-days before the Chinese naval parade.
